Statement by Richard M. Nixon: Vietnam

Richard M. Nixon criticizes the Johnson administration's handling of the Vietnam War, accusing the administration of failing to recognize that this is a new kind of war that cannot be fought with conventional means. Nixon expresses hope that the Paris Peace Talks will be effective, but if they are not, he proposes that the U.S. redouble its efforts to win the war by better preparing the South Vietnamese to win it themselves, a policy that would soon be known as Vietnamization.
